EINE KLEINE SUMMER MUSIC
Chamber Music in the Country

For 28 years EKSM has been presenting chamber music concerts in the casual rural setting of the Saanich Peninsula. From June 4th through July 3rd, world-class musicians come together to play duos, trios, quartets, and quintets by Brahms, Mozart, Dvorak, Ravel, and more. Our stunning venues include Muse Winery, De Vine Vineyards, and the First Unitarian Church. Special guests this season: Zuill Bailey, cellist, and the Lafayette String Quartet.

EKSM audiences will enjoy a number of “firsts” this season.
• This is the first time that Zuill Bailey will perform a solo recital in Victoria, and he’s going to play two of them, with two different programs!
• The Lafayette String Quartet, whose individual members have often played in EKSM, will for the first time play in our series as a quartet.
• Alana Despins, producer of those glorious Principal Horn solos with the Victoria Symphony, will join us to play chamber music.
• In addition to two concerts at the Muse Winery, we have added a performance at De Vine Vineyards.
Our opening program (June 4 Muse Winery/June 5 Unitarian Church) includes Mozart’s beloved Horn Quintet in E flat major, Brahms’ monumental Piano Quartet Op 26, and the little Shostakovich Piano Trio, Op 8 No. 1. Alana Despins will play a piece for solo horn, tba, in addition to being the star in the Mozart quintet. Other players include Terence Tam, violin; Kenji Fuse and Kay Cochrane, viola; Laura Backstrom, cello, and Lorraine Min, piano.
The Lafayette String Quartet’s performances (June 10 De Vine Vineyards/June 12 Unitarian Church) feature one of the best-loved chamber works of all time: Dvorak’s American Quartet. It is sunny, flowing, spacious, and full of folksy personality. Other works are Haydn’s Op 33, No 5 (Haydn’s 29th string quartet, to celebrate the LSQ’s 29 years together as an ensemble) and Shostakovich’s 7th String Quartet. The June 10th performance is a Friday evening at 7:00. Enjoy a magical summer evening overlooking grapevines, an orchard, and a panoramic ocean view.
Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and Sharon Stanis, violin; Joanna Hood, viola; Pamela Highbaugh Aloni, cello
Our third program presents our core players in various configurations. We’ll begin with the Rachmaninoff Trio élégiaque in G minor and Ravel’s colourful, impressionistically textural String Quartet in F Major. The second half of the program is the Romantic and tuneful Dohnanyi Piano Quintet in C minor.

Terence Tam and Julian Vitek, violin; Kenji Fuse, viola; Laura Backstrom, cello, and Lorraine Min, piano.

Zuill Bailey, widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, is a distinguished soloist, recitalist, Artistic Director and teacher. His rare combination of soaring artistry, technical mastery and engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought after and active cellists today.
Warmth, thoughtfulness and intimacy pervade Zuill Bailey's remarkable new version of Bach's Cello Suites...he demolishes the old idea that the Bach Cello Suites have something fusty and academic about them. Not so: In Bailey's hands, this is music of both profundity and joy." The Washington Post
In recitals, Bailey is known to embroider the main works with several encore-like miniatures, announced from the stage and dotted throughout the program. A charming raconteur, he weaves the pieces together with entertaining stories about the composers or himself. As a result, performances feel like an informal house concert, with like-minded aficionados sharing an experience and getting a connection to the pieces.
On Saturday, July 2nd, Zuill Bailey’s program includes sonatas by Boccherini, Prokofiev, and Debussy, as well as the Piatigorsky Variations on a theme of Paganini. Joining him at the piano is our own Lorraine Min, who has enjoyed a friendship with Zuill since their student days.
The following day, Sunday July 3rd, Zuill will present an entire program of the first three Bach Cello Suites. He and Lorraine will also, in some portions of the third Suite, introduce us to Robert Schumann’s little-known arrangement with piano accompaniment. An extra bonus: Mr. Bailey will play a series of short pieces that he will announce from the stage.
Both of the Zuill Bailey concerts will be held in the Unitarian Church at 2:30 p.m.

Finally, we are happy to announce that EKSM is taking steps to improve audience sightlines in the Unitarian Church performances, and to allow the audience to enter the hall earlier.
