Those who have been appreciating the short trip on a country road to a beautiful setting with top jazz musicians, completed with the musings of Reverend Shana, will be sure not to miss the next two vespers. Spirited Jazz will be on a short hiatus after the February vespers, just long enough for its avid supporters to miss the inspiring concerts before they return next fall.

January Vespers of 2017 opens with the Jon Miller Quartet. Jon has been on the West Coast since 1999 with jazz culled from a broad spectrum of musical interests.

“In playing music I resist the idea that anything is off limits for the sake of fitting into a particular format. For example I think it’s great that one reviewer described a track (from “3 Days in Winter”) as channeling Captain Beefheart while picking up on a Miles Davis reference in another…. I love playing things that people know and are familiar with but it’s also very rewarding to play new music for the very first time.”

Jon Miller’s most recent album, released May 2015, garnered interesting reviews:
"from a graceful ballad... to something that sounds like a Captain Beefheart shakedown..."
-R. Doull, BC Musician Magazine

“Whoa! Where have you been hiding, Jon Miller Quartet? ...on behalf of sun-deprived Canadians everywhere, thanks for this much needed dose of Vitamin D.”
-Robert Rowat, CBC Music

Before locating to the West Coast Jon lived in Montreal, Philadelphia and Amsterdam, playing drums in a wide range of formations. He has shared the stage with (among others) Jeff Healey, Charlie Hunter, Skip Bey, Vic Vogel and Hugh Fraser.

Enjoy jazz with a splash of spiritual inspiration in venues with exquisite sound and setting. These hour-long evening services are a unique blend of jazz and spirituality. Each service brings together live music from popular local jazz musicians, a brief meaningful message, and a little the history of the music performed.
