Systems of Oppression - Working in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and People of Colour
Melina Laboucan Massimo and Ruby Smith Diaz
What does it truly mean to be an ally to marginalized community? And why is it important to understand the history of the communities that you work in solidarity with? This workshop will be dedicated to uncovering the similar histories of oppression against Indigenous communities, and communities of Colour. Join our discussion of how these oppressions may continue to play out in radical communities today, and what you can do as an ally to prevent it.

Graphic Radicals Panel Discussion
Seth Tobocman, Rebecca Midgal, Kevin Pyle and Gord Hill with Allan Antliff
Artists from the World War 3 Illustrated collective and Indigenous graphic artist Gord Hill will discuss the dynamics of community activism and artistic production. The panel is being organized as part of the Graphic Radicals exhibit at the Legacy Gallery in downtown Victoria. What role can art play in galvanizing a community? How do aesthetics figure in the communication of an anti-authoritarian outlook? Are there lessons to be learned from past artistic practices? Should radicals pay more attention to art? This workshop will provide a forum for reflection and debate.

It Hurt so Good: How to make your own Flogger and explore Kink

This workshop will show you how to make a flogger out of bike inner tubes ("upcycled" and vegan, woah!). If that ain't exciting enough, we'll also talk about consent within the context of power exchange and sensation play. Please bring a few inner tubes and a pair of scissors if you can.

Poverty in Victoria: "Beautifying", "gentrifying" or "dehumanizing" Pandora Green?
The City of Victoria is drawing up a plan to "beautify" the 900-block of Pandora Avenue, an area many members of the street community call home. Pandora is at the epicentre of a growing poverty crisis in Victoria, and homeless people are facing displacement to another part of the city once again. The Committee to End Homelessness, Harm Reduction Victoria, Society of Living Intravenous Drug Users and the Victoria Coalition Against Poverty talk about issues and collective action.

Many people fighting to keep clean of addictions find it difficult to participate in milieus where intoxication is a norm. This workshop and discussion will explore the creation of sober safe spaces in radical communities and how to combat the marginalization of those who choose sobriety. We’ll take a critical look at intoxication culture and the positive alternatives a sober space might offer.

Free Fuel: How to do a Veggie Oil Conversion

This workshop will provide hands-on advice on how to convert your vehicle to run on veggie oil. All that is involved in the process will be visually explained from start to finish, from getting the parts, doing the labour and collecting and filtering veg oil. Questions welcomed. The workshop will take place outside the bookfair venue, near 680 Courtney Street.

Piracy, Egalitarianism and Radicalism

This workshop focuses on the contrast between organised life on ships run by commercial ventures and navies – symbolic spaces where the necessity of domination is propagated---and the culture of piracy. Pirates voluntarily agreed to radical forms of self-governance when "going on the account" to raid the sea lanes. We'll discuss where these rogues might have gotten their ideas of egalitarianism and governance from and how the protocols of piracy were symbolically secured. Drawing on the ideas of Peter Linebaugh, Marcus Rediker, Hakim Bey, and Stephen Snelders (as well as my own archival work), I’ll challenge the more sceptical perspective of Gabriel Kuhn (author of Life Under the Jolly Roger: Reflections on Golden Age Piracy) and open up some intra-anarchist controversy.

Join us for a discussion about what it means to love and nourish your-SELF, as a means of resistance to the establishment, through a fun and thought-provoking activity. Finally, we will close by addressing disordered eating and distorted body image within punk and anarchist communities, and a brainstorm on what we can ALL do to fight back!

Radically Touring (to us) is meeting your needs while you travel, in a DIY (Do It Yourself) manner, while keeping a sense of morals and ethics. In this workshop/discussion we will provide tools to help define ideas and create a step by step plan to make your 'seed goals' grow into healthy plans. Touring (traveling) through multiple locations can be accomplished safely and without alot of money/stress very easily (though radical to most people), and we are ready to tell you how we've done it.
Though Networking and relationship building, your foundations as a touring artist/speaker can be easily solidified. Your job security becomes the relationships you build (as well as your art:) Whether you're playing music, on a speaking tour, facilitating workshops, selling merchandise, or a hardworking parent, you have to rely on your respective networks. Friends, and Friends of Friends are the web that we are encouraging you to connect with as we help you build a tool kit of travelling skills.

Lumpen Linguistics: Some Thoughts on Slang, the Dangerous Classes, and Global Civil War

This workshop/seminar takes as its starting point the writing of former Situationist Alice Becker-Ho, in particular her work around slang and argot: ie, that secret jargon used by criminals, outlaws, and other members of “the dangerous classes” to avoid detection and capture by the authorities. After putting Becker-Ho’s work into its historical context and highlighting some of its major points, the conversation will turn to a consideration of how this material intersects with recent anarchist and communist theory. The overall goal here is to open a discussion of how language, invisibility, and insurrection come together in contemporary anarchist struggles.
