“Gordon Monahan has a rare talent for taking music to the mat. As the physicality and dynamism of [his works] Speaker Swinging and Piano Mechanics demonstrate, he has little time for, or patience with, any of the conceptual niceties that can encumber modern composition.” - The Wire

Open Space and the Victoria Conservatory of Music welcome sound artist Gordon Monahan (Toronto, Berlin) to Victoria for a week of sonic works featuring a new 8-channel sound installation, a performance of solo piano, Theremin and swinging speakers, an artist talk and a workshop, all events taking place Monday October 1 to Saturday October 6.

The highlights of Gordon Monahan’s Victoria Residency include the installation of a new 8-channel work called A Very Large Vinyl LP Constructed in Acoustic Space, at Alix Goolden Hall Wednesday October 3 to Saturday October 6, and a rare concert performance Thursday evening October 4, also at Alix Goolden Hall, of Monahan’s seminal works Piano Mechanics and Speaker Swinging, and a new work for processed Theramin.

Gordon Monahan’s works for piano, loudspeakers, video, kinetic sculpture, and computer-controlled sound environments span such genres as avant-garde concert music to multi-media installation and sound art. He juxtaposes natural acoustical phenomena with elements of media technology, environment, architecture, popular culture, and live performance.
