Event Archive - La Mélodie Française - French Art Song Competition:

Sun. November 2nd 2003 Alix Goolden Performance Hall (All Ages)
2:30 pm
By Donation Donation ($5)
Enjoy beautiful songs and a good contest as pianists and vocalists of the Victoria Conservatory of Music perform in the Conservatory's annual French Art Song Competition.

The French art song (la mélodie), like the German Lied, is essentially a poem set to music. However, the music and words are intended to enhance one another so that in performance the song becomes a duet between pianist and singer. The art song strives to be the perfect marriage of music and literature.

French Art song is among the most challenging vocal genres to master, because it requires excellent musical technique, intense expressiveness, and a careful balance between singer and pianist. Among the composers of la mélodie are Gounod, Massenet, Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel.

Admission by donation ($5 suggested)
