Holding Pattern formed in the summer of 1997, defining themselves in vague opposition to the somewhat muscular hardcore then predominant in their suburban scene. The evolution of their craft has seen them move away from early experiments with vocals and keyboards, to a more focussed exploration of the guitar-bass-drums dynamic, a decision for which the band makes no apologies. Holding Pattern confound audience expectations by fusing primal rock expression with a concentrated emphasis on song structure. The result is a wholly unique sound, born of an instinct that music is as much a product of tension, as an expression of harmony. A Toronto band with a firm distrust of the local musical community, Holding Pattern exist on the fringes of this circuit, remaining steadfast in a city where fashions change daily. Their dedication to music in the city nevertheless remains absolute, with involvement in projects as diverse as Rockets Red Glare, Sympathy Girls, David Caravaggio and Trains & Aeroplanes. Holding Pattern support the development of a resilient and free musical community, with members involved in the promotion of shows for like minded musical acts from across Canada and the United States.
