“Trance music” doesn’t get any more enthralling than that produced by Niyaz, which seamlessly blends Sufi mysticism and medieval Persian poetry with the newest possibilities of electronica. Famed vocalist/percussionist Azam Ali is best known as half of the bestselling duo Vas; her haunting voice has been heard on soundtracks from The Matrix to Alias. Born in Iran but raised in India, Ali sings in Farsi and Urdu, a perfect reflection of the cultural blendings at the core of this amazing ensemble. Multi instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian, famously associated with the band Axiom of Choice, is deeply involved with the music of his Iranian homeland. Aside from the guitar he plays the Turkish saz, the electric guitarviol, the Persian lute and various Kurdish instruments. The band includes Naser Musa oud/vocals, Jess Stroup guitar/programing/ keyboards and Salar Nader tabla.
“An alluring combination of medieval Persian and Indian exoticism . . . Ali’s voice is a glorious, unforgettable instrument.” –Billboard
