Title : Rough It Up by One Drop
Article Section : user
Article Text : Sadly, this is One Drop’s final album. There’s worse news, too. One Drop has kicked the can for the last time. Yeah, the band has disbanded after a six year experience. Hopefully they’ll get back together sooner or later, as this five song CD is pretty incredible. The first thing I thought of after listening to the disc once was that it captured the spirit of Lower Vancouver Island perfectly! It’s a fantastic blend of everything. Honestly, One Drop plays a large assortment of genres; reggae, punk, dancehall, dub and ska – and their roots are PUNK! The energy captured on this one CD is enough to entertain the listener as well as blow them away. This is music that needs to be played LOUDLY. You can try to play it soft, but somehow that volume dial keeps twisting and turning and next thing you know, you’re blaring at full volume! The definitive West Coast party music is a label I easily and happily pin on this CD. As stated on their website, “Contrast and variety are integral parts of the One Drop sound,” and it’s true, each track is something so different, yet they flow together perfectly. The band members are all quite talented, proven with their perfectly synchronized periods of “noise.” You have to hear it to believe it, and it’s great. Slipping into the local culture of BC bud, we’ve got the first track, “Location,” where you can “right your wrong with a righteous bong.” This is a great blended piece… the definitive West Coast sound is captured. I prefer “You Know Jack” with a punkish frenetic energy, myself. It’s the second track, and has a slightly angry feel to it. That sound usually captures my attention. It’s a little like a breathless race to the end of the song for the vocalist with a chaser of drums and companion roll of guitar, not to mention the entire band getting in there on an off-key accompaniment. You have to love it! It’s difficult to say farewell, but with “Al-Anon” the band captured a perfect goodbye tune for their fans. “They’re running away to the boozer Hall of Fame and then it’s back to Al-Anon.” One Drop has captured pretty much everything about being a band and being on the road in this short track, and offers up a laugh and a farewell all in one. This is their final album, and is available for a free listen in their audio section. Might as well check it out – you’ll either love it or hate it. There’s seriously no in between. I just wish I’d heard of them earlier! I don’t know for sure but I’m fairly certain the band name came from Bob Marley’s “One Drop.” – just one drop to feel it. Profundity.
